Falls and Balance

Everyone has the potential to have a fall, but falls incidences and severity do increase with age and can have significant consequences such as hospitalization. There are a number of reasons why the incidences of falls increases, but a majority of falls are preventable and the injuries from them can be minimized.

Fall Risk Factors

  • Health problems such as:
    • Stroke
    • Parkinson's disease
    • Arthritis
    • Low blood pressure
    • Dizziness
    • Diabetes
    • Depression
    • Dementia
    • Incontinence
    • Poor nutrition
    • Flu or other short term infection
  • A fall in the past six months
  • Medications, particularly if you are taking in excess of four

  • Poor home set up eg. Loose carpets

It is important to have a plan in place should you have a fall. This should include strategies to contact help, eg. Personal alarms, who to call and what to do when you've had the fall.

Group Exercise

Physical activity is an integral part of a healthy lifestyle and as we aged it becomes increasingly important to keep active to stave off numerous potential health issues.

Body changes due to inactivity include:

  • Reduced muscle mass, endurance and strength
  • Reduced joint mobility/flexibility
  • Reduced coordination and balance
  • Reduced cardiovascular and respiratory function

Health Problems that result from a lack of physical activity include:

  • Increased blood pressure
  • Increased risk of various diseases including cardiovascular disease and stroke.
  • Increased susceptibility to mood disorders, eg. anxiety and depression
  • Reduced bone strength
  • Increased risk of falling
